Donate Your Rate to Support the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic

TAS Gives Back 2019

Since 2010, The Advocates' Society TAS Gives Back campaign has raised over ½ million dollars for charitable causes through our Donate Your Rate ™ campaign. This year we are supporting the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic

The Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic is a specialized legal clinic for women experiencing violence, established in the memory of Barbra Schlifer – a young lawyer who was violently murdered on the night of her call to the Ontario bar in 1980. In her memory, the Clinic assists more than 5,000 women a year to build lives free from violence through counselling, legal representation and language interpretation.

Our campaign this year will help fund two special projects at the Clinic that aim to support legal professionals and their at risk clients by developing tools and training that will benefit lawyers across Canada.

#1: Risk Assessment Tool
The Clinic wants to develop a risk assessment tool for lawyers who have clients who may be at risk of violence. The tool would assist lawyers in exploring and evaluating the risk factors in the lives of clients, and help lawyers to understand when additional steps to protect women’s safety may be required. The goal is to make this tool, free, and widely accessible.

#2: Trauma-informed Lawyering
The Clinic has expertise with clients who have been exposed to various forms of violence and trauma. “Trauma-informed lawyering,” which impacts the manner in which a lawyer communicates/interacts with a client or potential client, can sometimes be at odds with traditional legal training, and it raises unique ethical issues. Funding will help the Clinic develop and deliver in-person and/or virtual training in trauma-informed lawyering at locations across Canada.

Donate Your Rate™ and help support these valuable initiatives. We are unable to direct funds to a specific project. All donors will receive a 2019 charitable tax receipt. Please make cheques payable to The Advocates’ Society. Donation deadline is June 1, 2019.
