Please note that this program is only open to participants of the February 28 plenary session of
Evidence for Litigators (Alberta).
Participants of the
Evidence for Litigators (Alberta) plenary session are also eligible to join us for our hands-on skills workshop, which will be held in-person in Calgary and Edmonton, or live online via Zoom.
The workshop is your chance to practice raising and responding to objections in a supportive environment. Each participant will be asked to prepare and present a slice of an examination-in-chief and a cross-examination with proper questions as well as one or two potentially objectionable questions. When not acting as examining counsel, you will take turns listening to, identifying and objecting to the other side’s improper questions, while stating the basis for the objection. You will then get practical, individualized feedback on your performance from our trained instructors, and will learn from your peers as you work through the interactive exercises in small groups.
Please note that this workshop is designed for counsel with minimal evidentiary experience. However, please be advised that you will need to have some facility with examinations-in-chief and cross-examination for this workshop as the goal of the workshop is to layer skills relating to objections on top of basic examination skills, rather than to develop examination skills more generally.
This workshop requires advance preparation based on a mock case file, which will be provided to you in advance of the workshop. Please ensure that you set aside enough time to prepare for the workshop, which may take up to a half-day to prepare for, depending on your level of experience.
