Rules of Civil Procedure. Learn about potential changes to the way you practise litigation inside and outside the courtroom.
In the fall of 2023, Chief Justice Geoffrey Morawetz of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Attorney General of Ontario Doug Downey announced a complete review of Ontario’s Rules of Civil Procedure.
Justice Cary Boswell and lawyer Allison Speigel were tapped to lead the Civil Rules Review Working Group, tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of the Rules and, through consultation, identifying changes that would increase efficiency and access to justice, reduce complexity and costs, maximize the effective use of court resources, reduce delay, and leverage technical solutions.
Over the course of 2024, the Civil Rules Review Working Group consulted with stakeholders and developed a series of proposals to reform how Ontario’s civil justice system works, from starting a civil case to enforcing a judgment. The Working Group released the consultation paper outlining their proposals for reform on April 1, 2025.
On April 10, 2025, all advocates are invited to a virtual session with Justice Boswell and Ms. Speigel, to hear about the Working Group's proposals to overhaul the civil justice system in Ontario. The program will feature a Q&A session with the co-chairs.
